The optical phenomenon of the halo around a moon or sun is a beautiful sight to behold. It is “produced by light interacting with ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere, resulting in a wide variety of colored or white rings, arcs and spots in the sky.” Wikipedia Capturing the atmospheric effect with a camera is easiest at night with the moon. Taking photos of the halo around the sun takes special care and sometimes filters (photography techniques link).
Last night, June 30, 2015, a large double ringed halo was around the moon in San Antonio, TX. Using my Canon 6D and a wide angle lens (Sigma 12-24mm, 1:4.5-5.6) I was able to capture the aura using a tripod, manual settings and some bracketing techniques. I then processed these with Photomatix Pro and Adobe Lightroom CC. Here are some of my favorites:
